You run a good business. You do a good job for your customers...at least you think you do.

Some of your customers talk about you to their friends, but not ALL of your customers do. You’re probably wondering how come they don’t just automatically refer you to peers.

There are three reasons for this.

First is it’s not their job. They are not your paid salesperson. They are not walking away from your business looking for people so they can sing your praises.

Second reason is they quickly forget about you. They paid you for something and now they have lots of other important items on their to-do list. A day or two goes by and you’re no longer in recent memory.

The third reason is most of us don’t ask for referrals in the right way, if we ask at all.

Yeah sure, you tell customers, “We LOVE referrals!” So what? Everybody knows that. Or you might even believe those referral “gurus” who tell you to ask people for a list of their friends, family, neighbors, college sweethearts, fraternity brothers, doctors, and high school bullies. Can you tell those people your customer gave you permission to call? You’re kidding, right?

Look, you WANT referrals—and LOTS of them! But if you don’t have a workable, proven, formal referral marketing program (74.3% of businesses don’t), then you’re just praying for them to happen.
